The whipsaw nature of stocks in the year’s first month has raised anxiety levels for investors – but it’s also raising the levels of market activity. A recent report by Barclays projected that trading volumes will stay elevated over the near term as declining energy prices and Chinese equity nervousness continue to increase market participation.
That could mean good things for companies like Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), which operates 11 exchanges, including the New York Stock Exchange, and offers trading in more than 12,000 securities across nine asset classes. As Barron’s put it, “When anything happens in the world markets, someone usually ends up paying ICE.”
The stocks of many electronic trading firms could be set to move higher, especially if quarterly earnings announcements show early-year volumes exceeded expectations. (ICE, for example, reports Feb. 4).
With that in mind, we’ve selected Electronic Trading as our Motif of the Week. Beginning today through Friday, Feb. 5, you can trade this motif, commission-free.
