Ideas-Based, Online-Investing Start-Up Adds Board Firepower Amid Swift Growth in New Products
San Mateo, CA, Feb. 13, 2013
Motif Investing, the company that pioneered ideas-based stock investing, announced that Arthur Levitt, the former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, has joined the company’s board of directors.
Levitt, a longtime advocate for the individual investor, had previously been an adviser to Motif. The Silicon Valley, venture-backed company allows customers to invest online in specific collections of stocks, bonds or ETFs called “motifs” that are linked by a common theme, such as tablet computing, home improvement or global inflation.
“I’ve been advising Motif and its enterprising leader, Hardeep Walia, for a year now, and I’m persuaded this company is providing individuals with a powerful array of tools to manage their investments creatively and transparently,” said Levitt, who was appointed SEC Chairman by President Bill Clinton in 1993. “Motif’s products—both equity and debt—provide new and unique mechanisms that greatly simplify the investing process at a very low cost.”
Walia, Motif’s co-founder and chief executive, said Levitt has been an “invaluable adviser” to his company and is now in a better position to help guide Motif’s strategic direction. He added he is “humbled” by Levitt’s support and looks forward to working with him closely as Motif continues to expand its product offerings and bring sophisticated, Wall Street investing tools to Main Street investors.
Levitt was the SEC’s twenty-fifth and longest-serving SEC chairman. He stepped down in 2001 after launching several pro-investor initiatives, such as the commission’s www.sec.gov Web site and the Office of Investor Education and Assistance. Prior to his SEC tenure, Levitt had a distinguished career on Wall Street, including a stint as chairman of the American Stock Exchange. He also served as chairman of the New York City Economic Development Corporation and owned Roll Call, a publication that covers national legislative affairs. Currently Levitt is also a director of Bloomberg LP and a senior adviser to the Carlyle Group.
